What we did:
NuScale Power develops unique modular nuclear plants intended to bring power to hard-to-reach locations. Their clientele includes government leaders around the world.
We were hired by NuScale’s Controller to help them select and implement an accounting solution that would enable them to comply with government audit requirements. NuScale was pre-revenue and had over 100 employees (mostly engineers) at the time. With the sale of a single product, they were poised to go from $0 to $250 million in revenue overnight.
Approach:
- Making sure we understood their most critical people, process and technology requirements.
- Digging deep into the ERP solutions to ensure the right fit and locating a partner with the government project accounting experience to handle their audit (DCAA) requirements.
- Communicating our proven process for successfully selecting an ERP solution to NuScale’s selection committee; keeping them engaged in the process along with us.
Challenges:
- Finding an ERP solution capable of handling NuScale’s unique requirements and a partner with the industry experience to help them develop processes that didn’t exist yet.
- Needing controls in place to efficiently track spending in relation to project work to be eligible for government grant funding for additional product development.
- Needing to meet product deliveries for grants received to date, meet government audit requirements and special regulations before the company had even made any revenue.
Results:
- Helped NuScale find a partner with extensive government contract experience and choose the right ERP solution.
- One year after implementation, NuScale was awarded the much anticipated U.S. DOE Funding for its SMR Technology.
